It was a big departure from how Bruce marketed his music to the public. Music videos were extreme influential on popular music at that time.

For long time Springsteen fans like myself, watching the studio made videos and fake concert footage from this album was appalling. It makes me cringe to watch the scenes when Bruce pulls Courtney Cox out of the crowd and they dance on stage to “Dancing in the Dark” or the fake bar band sequence when Steve and Bruce are harmonizing to “Glory Days”. They look like complete fools.

The commercial criticism of the album should have been more focused on those awful videos and not the music on the album. The videos were very popular and significantly broadened his audience to the pop mainstream. The videos were completely out of character for Springsteen and an embarrassment to the music. Bruce has never made another video like those on Born in the USA again in his career.

The record as a whole contains a few real gems. Born in the USA, No Surrender, and My Hometown are a few of my all time favorites. Glory Days has been catching up as the years go by and my hair turns gray.

BPAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
